Take control of your health journey
Weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) is a life-changing investment in your long-term health and wellbeing. At Sea Change Weight Loss Clinic, we believe that everyone should have access to the highest quality surgical care.
If you do not have private health insurance, or if your current policy does not cover bariatric procedures, you can still access our specialist surgeons and holistic care team through our Self-Funded pathway.
Why Choose Self-Funded Surgery?
For many patients in Newcastle and the Hunter Region, self-funding weight loss surgery is a way to bypass long public hospital waiting lists and take immediate action against chronic obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, and heart disease.
Benefits of the Self-Funded Pathway at Sea Change:
- No waiting periods: Unlike the public system or new private health policies, you can schedule your surgery within weeks of your initial consultation.
- Specialist care: Your surgery is performed by Dr Mark Gately or Dr Martin McLeod at Lingard Private Hospital.
- Holistic support: Our self-funded packages include 12 months of follow-up care with our specialist surgeons and dietetic support.
Pricing and Financial Estimates
We pride ourselves on financial transparency. While the total cost of self-funded surgery varies depending on the hospital stay and specific procedure, we provide a detailed Informed Financial Consent after your initial consultation. Find out more here:
Using Your Superannuation
Many of our patients fund their weight loss surgery by applying for the Early Release of Superannuation on compassionate grounds. This is a common and legitimate way to cover the costs of surgery and hospital fees.
Our team is experienced in supporting patients through this process, providing the necessary medical reports and documentation to assist with your application to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Find out more here:

FAQs
Is there a Medicare rebate for self-funded patients?
Yes. Even if you are self-funding, Medicare provides a rebate for a portion of the surgeon’s and anaesthetist's fees, provided you have a valid referral and meet the clinical criteria.
Is a referral from a GP required to book a specialist appointment with the surgeons at Sea Change?
Yes, a current referral from your General Practitioner (GP) is required before your initial consultation. Amongst other things, this is mandatory for Medicare and private health insurance purposes, ensuring you are eligible for any applicable rebates.
Where are surgeries performed?
